Celine’s husband Richard has been brutally murdered with a three-iron on his Alpine golf course in the French Alps, yet she must fulfill her social obligations as family, friends, and acquaintances come to pay their respects. As she does so, she recalls the last time they spent together, playing a round of golf, and wonders how their life together—how her own life—could have possibly led her to this moment. Nicole Brun-Mercer melds elements of popular fiction, character-driven literature, and a psychological thriller in a shockingly satisfying marriage of form and content. Each chapter begins on the day of the funeral a new guest or family member, a new memory, a deeper understanding of self and spouse. Traversing eighteen years of marriage through eighteen chapters, Celine draws nearer to both the truth of her husband’s demise and the truth of her own life. By reliving her last round of golf with her husband, she begins to open her eyes to her triumphs, her failures, and the role her marriage to Richard played in it all. But with the only private investigator we have being Celine’s conscience, can we trust the recollections and decisions of one of the suspects to provide a fair and balanced account of the events? With breakneck pacing and full of intrigue and almost unbearable suspense, Brun-Mercer’s latest is a thought-provoking look at relationships and what drives us to accept less for—and from—ourselves. Almost as much of a subtle cultural guide to France as a murder mystery, she beautifully renders the country and the human soul with a profound minimalism that cannot be measured in page counts. Wonderfully affecting and delicately rendered, The 18th Hole is a provocative tale of love and murder, and the fairways that lead to both.

Nicole Brun-Mercer's, The 18th Hole, is a fast paced, breezy read with a little something for everyone. Set in the French Alps, the novel delves into the marriage of Celine and Richard, a couple married 18 years and who, on the day of Richard's death, will play one last round of golf together. On the 18th hole, Richard will be brutally murdered with a three iron. The question is who did it and why?As Celine recalls each of the 18 years of her marriage after Richard's funeral in the 18 chapters of the book, it slowly becomes clear that Celine herself has as good a reason as anyone to want to "off" her husband. The question is: did she? Or did something even more sinister take place, since over the course of the book it becomes evident that Celine is not the only one who is not too pleased with Richard.
Whether or not Celine killed her husband, however, is not the point. How, over 18 years, did their relationship become what it is at the end of Richard's life? And more importantly, how do any of our relationships become what they are, good or bad, over an extended period of time? They say that familiarity breeds contempt. In Celine and Richard's case, this could not be more true.
Much food for relationship thought here!

The 18th Hole Nicole BrunMercer 9781463752545 Books Reviews
The author grabs your attention right from the beginning. Her characters are complex and realistic. If you like golf, you'll love her descriptions of the couple's last round of golf in the French alps. I found this book hard to put down. A fast and insightful read.
I took this book with me on vacation, started to read it in the morning and couldn't put it down until I'd finished it. (Fortunately, I remembered to use sunscreen.) I'm not a golfer but I know enough about the game to appreciate the way the author wove the strands of the game together in her plot. And...it leaves you wondering just a bit about exactly what happened after all! Great fun!
Too many characters and too much jumping around. The book wasn't one that would make you want to keep reading. It was very easy to put down and come back to later. I am an avid reader and if the book is really good, I have a hard time not finishing it as quickly as possible. I didn't feel this way about this book.
